For more than 20 years Earth Networks has operated the world’s largest and most comprehensive weather observation, lightning detection, and climate networks.
We are now leveraging our big data smarts to deliver on the promise of IoT. By integrating our hyper-local weather data with Smart Home connected devices we are delievering predictive energy efficiency insight to homeowners and Utility companies.
When a pesky winter system finally exits your area, there can still be lingering threats even if the weather is finally dry. Extra caution and awareness to local reports will be necessary in the days following a storm.
You should continue to follow the news and stay informed, especially about road conditions. If your power or water is off, check with local utility and water companies to see when they may be turned back on or when water is safe to consume and use. If travel is a must, check that your exhaust pipe is clear and brush off all snow and ice from your vehicle.
Speaking of road concerns, avoid flooded roads that can occur due to melting snow and ice. Standing water may contain hidden dangers like debris, such as fallen branches, wires and sharp objects. Toxins and chemicals washed in from homes, businesses and lawns may be mixed in as well, so avoid walking in any water as well. When out and about on the roads, be sure to continue to listen to the news on the radio for traffic alerts as well as follow on detours. Icy roads can linger as well. Black ice is notoriously difficult to see, so go slower than normal and allow for extra time if you must use the roads.
If you decide that commuting is not an immediate need, then take the time to check out your friends and family and even neighbors. If the power is still out in your home, be sure to keep your portable generator outside. Using this gadget in your home or garage can produce carbon monoxide, which can ultimately lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and death. Check in with friends and family as well as your neighbors to let them know you are okay and see if they are using their generators properly so they don’t pose the risk of poisoning.
